We absolutely LOVE this 3 strand pull through braid! It’s such a cool and different look. And it’s easy! You can’t beat a style like that if you ask me! This style holds up well so it’s great for sports, dance, school, and more.
My friend Shelley, the amazing talent behind Pretty Little Braids on Instagram and on Facebook, came up with this style a few months ago. I fell in love with it right away and am so blessed that she agreed to let me film a tutorial on it!
Let’s get started on how to do this beautiful 3 strand pull through braid!
I found a little trick for making this braid go faster and using less elastics, you can find it in my video here:
Step 1. Brush the hair out and pull the hair into 3 ponytails – make sure they are in a straight line and equidistant apart.
Step 2. Optional step – tease the hair in those 3 ponytails.
Step 3. Take the hair from the 1st ponytail and split it into 3 equal parts.
Step 4. Take the hair from the 2nd ponytail and split it into 2 equal parts.
Step 5. Take the 2 pieces from the 2nd ponytail and pull them up and around the middle strand from the 1st ponytail, then rejoin those two pieces — this means that from the 3 strands you created from the 1st ponytail, one is going around on either side of the 2nd ponytail and one is going through the 2 pieces of the 2nd ponytail.
Step 6. Rejoin the 3 pieces from the 1st ponytail into one and add them to the 3rd ponytail, securing with an elastic. You now have 2 ponytails.
Step 7. Go back and gently pull the edges of the hair that you have just split and joined into the new ponytail to give it a nice, full effect.
Step 8. Create a new 3rd ponytail, making sure it is in a straight line from the other two and equidistant away. **You can create this ponytail against the head or, if you have run out of hair along the head, then take your 2nd ponytail, split it in 2 parts horizontally and secure the bottom part with an elastic equidistant away from the last elastic. That makes a new ponytail and you have 3 ponytails now.
Step 9. Repeat steps 2-8 all the way down the braid.
Step 10. When you no longer have enough hair to do another full stitch of the braid, take the 2 pieces of hair that remain from your last 2nd ponytail and secure them together along with the remainder of the hair that is left .
Step 11. Go back and pull the hair a little more to even out or create an even more full look if you would like. Finish with hairspray if you’d like.
If that was confusing, please watch the video tutorial! I know that I’m more of a visual learner, but I find this one a little confusing to read through and get, but sooooo easy to learn once you’ve seen it done! And it’s just such a cool look. It’s a cute hairstyle for girls and edgy enough that teens and adults will love it too. It’s worth taking a minute to learn!
Thanks so much for reading! I hope you’ll come back soon!
