4 Strand Ribbon braids - great tutorials using this easy technique, there are ideas for all ages here!

It’s day 8 of the 30 Day Braiding Challenge – 30 Days of New Braids.

It’s hard to believe that we are on our second week of the challenge already!  If you haven’t done any of other challenge days – that’s ok!  It’s not too late to join.  And as I always say – if you can’t manage all 30 days, that’s ok too!  You’ll be amazed at how your skills will grow if you just try for as many days as you can manage.

Today’s challenge is the 4 Strand Ribbon Braid.  I know that there are some of you out there who would not feel comfortable with ribbon braided into your hair — and I get that.  I’ve only done it in my own hair a couple of times, while I love it on my girls’ hair.  But be brave with me, let’s step outside our comfort zones and try something new.  Who knows?  Maybe it will be your new favorite style.  And don’t worry, I made sure to share some tutorials below that show that it’s not just for little girls!

The Technique

Here is my 4 Strand Ribbon Braid tutorial.  You can find my original post on it here.  The easiest way to do it is in a ponytail – so if you are new to braiding, this would be a great way to start.  I’ll mention, it’s totally normal for it to twist and not just lay flat.  That’s just what happens with it, but it’s still so pretty like that.

Alternative Ways to 4 Strand Braid

Alternative 4 strand ribbon braid tutorial by Bebexo.  This is the braid most commonly known as the 3D round braid (a 4 strand braid) but she has done it with 2 strands of ribbon for a very unique look.

Candy Cane Braid tutorial by Princess Hairstyles.  This braid is also known as a woven 4 strand ribbon braid.  Both names are quite fitting because of the way the ribbon is woven into the braid to give it a beautiful striped look.

Additional Ways to Use the Technique

4 Strand French Ribbon Braid tutorial by Jenni’s Hairdays.  This braid looks beautiful pulled across the head on a diagonal like she teaches here.

Laced Ribbon Braid tutorial by me.  It is two 4 strand ribbon braids that are laced together at the bottom part for a beautiful and surprisingly durable style.

Butterfly Hairstyle tutorial by Princess Hairstyles.  This style looks so complicated – and while it’s not the easiest of styles, it’s so much easier than it looks!  Since it features a 4 strand ribbon braid, I thought I’d include this one in today’s post for some of my more adventurous readers.

4 Strand Chain Braid tutorial by Lilith Moon.  Doing it on the side makes it easy to do on yourself and the chain she uses really makes it a more mature style.

I hope that this post gives you some great ideas.  I’d love to see how you do today’s challenge!  You can share a photo on my Facebook page, tag me in a photo on Instagram – @hair_by_lori or just use the hashtags #30DaysNewBraids #30DNBDay8.

  1. Hi Lori,I just wanted to let you know I love your site, my Granddaughter that I have raised since 2 had long beautiful hair and I’ve been trying to learn to French Braid, if I know how to and wouldn’t take me so long my Granddaughter would let me do her hair everyday instead of wanting it down all the time 🙂 Thank You
