Amazing Hairstyles - From Easy to Elegant, by Becky Porter

I have followed Becky Porter from Babes in Hairland blog on Instagram since before I started blogging.  She does beautiful styles on her daughters and I have always admired her work. Becky announced way back in the middle of August, 2014 that she had a book coming out and that it was available to pre-order so I went over to Amazon and pre-ordered mine.  It was still almost 3 months before it came out – but it was worth the wait!

Today I am doing a book review of Amazing Hairstyles – from Easy to Elegant by Becky Porter and I’m doing a giveaway as well!

For those of you who prefer to watch rather than read a review – I did a YouTube video review as well.

Amazing Hairstyles – from Easy to Elegant is a great book that any mom would love to have!  Becky starts by talking about different tools, terms and techniques.  Then she gets into basic styles and works her way to more complicated ones.  She has great photos and clear step by step instructions.  I obviously am a fan of YouTube tutorials since I do them myself, but some styles can be hard to understand – I want to pause them and look and have what is being done at that very point explained to me.  Well, you get that with this book!  Her beautifully written instructions make it easy to understand and to recreate the styles in this book.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I love having a paper book to hold in my hands.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the internet.  It’s great that I can look up thousands of different styles and techniques there.  But for me, sometimes I just love a real book.  I find it especially nice when I don’t want to get lost online… I often go online for one specific purpose, then get sidetracked and realize an hour or more later that I never even did the thing that brought me online!  When you don’t have time to get lost online, perhaps a busy school morning (or really, most any morning because they all seem to be pretty busy!) it would be so nice to just pull out this book, pick out a style really quick and have concise instructions on how to do it.

My girls really liked Amazing Hairstyles – from Easy to Elegant too.  They liked being able to flip through and pick out a hairstyle that they wanted done on themselves.  My oldest, Hope, liked that there were styles in there easy enough for her to do and asked to use my mannequin head to practice on.

Here are some photos of a beautiful 4 Strand braid updo that Hope wanted from the book:

The book says “Styles for Any Age or Occasion”.  I agree with “Any Occasion”.  There are a great variety of styles here – 57 styles total – so you could find something fitting of whatever you have going on.  I don’t agree with “Any Age” as much.  There are certainly some younger girl styles and then some that would be perfect for older girls, teens, college age… but there aren’t many that I would pick for myself.  There are some styles that would work for me, or some that I could do and then loosen and soften to give me the more mature look that I prefer, but I think that the majority of styles in this book are best suited for girls 2-22.  That’s why I really think that this is a fantastic book for moms, dads, or other caregivers to own.  This would also be such a wonderful book for a tween or teen who is learning to braid on themselves or others.

Here are some photos of a Waterfall Twist & Fishtail (Fishbone) Braid that we picked out of the book:

I love Amazing Hairstyles – from Easy to Elegant by Becky Porter and I think that you will love it too!  You can buy your own copy here.

I’m also giving away my copy of the book because, well, I love giving things away!  And I love this book and would love to see someone else get to enjoy it too. You can enter my giveaway here:  a Rafflecopter giveaway

This was an unsponsored post.  I bought this book myself and am giving my unbiased opinion of it.  No one asked me to do a review and I was not compensated for doing so.

Hair By Lori is giving away a copy of “Amazing Hairstyles – from Easy to Elegant” that she purchased herself.  There are no sponsors to this post or this giveaway.  One winner will be drawn randomly and notified by email. The winner will have 48 hours to respond in order to claim their prize. If they do not respond within the 48 hours, they will forfeit the prize and an alternate winner will be chosen.

This giveaway is only open to those living in the US aged 18 and older.  I would love to open it up internationally to everyone, but to be frank, I’m intimidated by all the rules and laws regarding international giveaways.  While I LOVE giving to others, I have to make sure that I’m not exposing myself to fines or worse by doing so.  I hope that you will understand this.

  2. I would love to win this book! I have 3 daughters (ages 14 & 10 year old twins) that love to have their hair done, & love to learn to do different hairstyles by themselves, too! This book would be a great tool for them to use! 🙂

  3. I would like to win this book because when I babysit, I prefer to not get my phone out unless it is an emergency, but I love doing the girl’s hair, and never have any ideas for styles, so this would be a great thing to take with me when I babysit. I would also like to win it for my sister to use. She just turned 13, but still doesn’t really know how to braid hair, and she would like to learn.

  4. I love trying new stuff on my hair and my little sisters! This looks so great and makes it look so easy. Thank you so much for doing this. It would be so lovely to win this. :)(:

  6. I bought this book last September, and my daughter and I love the book. I would love to win this book to give to my dear friend Kim and her daughter Alissa. Alissa often spends the night at my house and Alissa loves going through the book to find a cute hairstyle for me to do in the morning. Kim comes to me asking how to do different hairstyles, but she is a busy Mom and does not have time to find cute styles online so the book would be perfect for them to enjoy.

  7. This would be amazing to win. Not only would I benefit from it but my daughter Ashton would as well. She is just starting out learning how to braid and is very excited to do different styles. I think this book would be an awesome gift for her. Thank you! ♡

  9. I love the book idea so my daughter can choose her own styles! I don’t like her on my phone so this will be perfect for us!!

  10. I would love to win this book! I have followed Becky’s Babes in Hairland blog since I discovered it when my daughter was about 20 months old and love her ideas! I feel the same way about your blog and your ideas as well and am so glad you started it! Like you, I love all things hair, and I’ve been trying to convince my husband I need more hair related things for my birthday coming up in about a month, but it may be a tough sell for him! Here’s hoping!

  11. I would like to win this book to give to my cousin who is 5. Her m and grandma do her hair occasionally but I mainly do it! She would be able to pick styles from this book without fuss! She could also practice them from the book because she’s getting into hair after watching me do hers for a while!

  12. I would love to win this book because I think it would be a wonderful tool to help me learn more braiding techniques. I am always eager to learn new braids and try new styles. My daughter would also enjoy this book as she loves looking at styles and choosing the ones we try.
