Video Tutorial: Ribbon Christmas Tree Braid

Today’s tutorial is actually a remake of my first ever tutorial.  It’s funny – I had my blog in the process of being designed last year at this time but I never intended on doing video tutorials.  It scared me!  I did not want to be in front of the camera.

But then this style went viral!  A foreign Facebook page took my photo and posted it, and it started getting shared like crazy.  By the time it had reached 500k people, it had been shared to some of my braiding friends and they recognized it as my work and let me know about it.  It was crazy to see so many people interested in it!  I just kept watching more and more people liking, commenting and sharing it from that foreign FB page.  In the end, it was seen by over 22 million people!  Everyone kept commenting “how do you do it?!” and “show us how!”so I faced my fears and filmed my first tutorial.

Pictured above is the photo that went viral.  When I did the style, I never could have imagined that people would love it so much.  I’m so glad that they did though – and I’m thankful that everyone wanted a tutorial!  It made me face my fear of being in front of the camera and now I absolutely love filming hair tutorials.

I did a tutorial last December for this style, but it was terrible.  It was filmed on my phone and I couldn’t figure out how to edit it.  I keep it on my YouTube channel as a reminder to myself of just how far I’ve come, but this style definitely deserves a better tutorial.

Today I have that updated tutorial – and I’m pleased to announce that this is kicking off a 12 Braids of Christmas series!  For the next 12 days, come back to my blog here and check out a new Christmas hairstyle tutorial every day!

Let’s get started on how to do this Ribbon Christmas Tree Braid!

Supplies you’ll need: a Christmas Tree Braid Kit (comes complete with all you need) OR elastics, ribbon, and decorations.

Time: 10-15 minutes

Skill Level:  Easy

GARLAND & ORNAMENT DECORATION INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1. Pull the top of the hair back, secure with elastic.

Step 2. Section off half of the hair from the top ponytail.

Step 3. Take half the hair from the ponytail and braid, adding hair into the strand on the left only. Add hair for 4-5 stitches then stop adding hair, braiding out another few stitches and securing with an elastic.

Step 4. Repeat step 3 on the other side, adding hair in only on the right of the braid.

Step 5. Take your piece of ribbon. Gently pull the top most stitch of your braid on each side up so that you can slide the ends of the ribbon down through. Pull the ribbon so that you have an even amount on each side.

Step 6. Continue lacing the ribbon through the each stitch of the braid, alternating sides, as if you were lacing up a shoe. At the bottom you will pull the two separate ends of the braids together, secure with an elastic, then wrap the ends of the ribbon around so they cover the elastic and tie.

Step 7. If you have ornaments – Twist in the hair gems so that they are spread out and form a triangle.

If you have garland – Tuck the garland through the top of the ribbon. Then lace the garland through the braid as you did the ribbon, doing one color all the way then the other color. Tuck the ends into the braid. If you find the ends don’t stay, you may want to bobby pin them.

Step 4. Repeat step 3 on the other side, adding hair in only on the right of the braid.

Step 5. Take your LED lights and pull the end up through your top elastic, stopping when you get to the plastic covered wire.

Step 6. Pick up your top elastic again and tuck the battery box down through it so that it hangs down in a place where it will be hidden.
