Dutch Braids (or reverse inverse French braids) - great tutorials for different braided styles with Dutch braids here!

It’s day 2 of the 30 Day Braiding Challenge – 30 Days of New Braids!

Today’s challenge is the Dutch braid.  If you’ve never done the Dutch braid before, it’s basically an inside out French braid.  It’s just as easy to learn and do.

Fine hair tip – I find that Dutch braids don’t hold quite as well as a French braid on fine hair, so you may want to braid it wet, or texturize it using a micro crimper or by spraying some dry shampoo on (yes, even on clean hair – it just helps to give the hair a little more grab).  You also will not want to pancake it (pull the edges to make it bigger) too much if you are braiding on fine hair as this will cause it to fall out more quickly.

The Technique

Here is my tutorial on the Dutch braid, teaching the basic technique.  You can find my original post teaching the Dutch braid here.

DIY Tutorial

Mohawk Dutch braid tutorial from Missy Sue.  I like how she angles her braid every so slightly to give you a nice over the shoulder braid too.

Additional Ways to Use the Technique

Soft Dutch braid tutorial from Twist Me Pretty.  This is such an easy and fast way to incorporate a braid into your hairstyle.  I love how soft and pretty it is!

Woven twist ponytail style tutorial from Princess Hairstyles.  This is a fun and pretty way to wear your Dutch braids!

Viking braid ponytail tutorial from Cute Girls Hairstyles.  This is such a beautiful style for all you lovers of the messy look that is in right now!

Pigtails with Woven Ribbon Headband tutorial by me.  I love this hairstyle for little girls, isn’t it darling?!

There are so many ways that you can use the Dutch braid technique in  your hairstyling.  Get creative with it!  Think of different ways that you can part the hair or angle the braid.  Think about half up styles, styles into a bun or a ponytail..  Maybe combine it with a French braid or another braid.

I’d love to see how it comes out for you!  You can share a photo on my Facebook page, tag me in a photo on Instagram – @hair_by_lori or just use the hashtags #30DaysNewBraids #30DNBDay2.
