Day 16 – Zipper Braid

Zipper braid tutorials - this is a little tricky to get at first, but it's soooo cool and stays in so nicely for sports and oth

We are on to day 16 of our 30 Day Braiding Challenge – 30 Days of New Braids.

Today’s braid is the zipper braid.  Many people confuse the zipper braid with the suspended infinity braid (which we will be doing on day 18) but there is a different look to them if you look closely and a different technique is used to braid each.

Zipper Braid vs. Suspended Infinity Braid

Take a look at this photo from the amazingly talented Braidsandstyles12 (On IG here and FB here).  Left is the zipper braid and right is the suspended infinity braid.  Can you see a difference?  Notice the way the outside edge loops on each.

The zipper braid is such an awesome braid and I was sooooo excited the first time I got it!  I’ll admit – it did take me a couple tries to get it started.  Once you have it started though, it’s repetitive and easy to do.   Stick with it, you can do it!  And when you do, I hope you love it as much as I do.

The Technique

DIY Tutorial

DIY Zipper Braid tutorial by Yiyayellowhairstyles.  She shows you how to achieve this gorgeous look on yourself.  This is definitely one of the most complicated braids in this challenge, but she simplifies it for you here.

Variation of the Technique

Zipper Braid Updo tutorial by Cute Girls Hairstyles.  This gorgeous style is perfect for sports.  She recommends doing it on wet/damp hair and I definitely agree, that gives you a neater braid when you are done.  Also, be sure that you are adding in smaller sections of hair for an intricate look like you see here.

Ribbon Zipper Braid tutorial by Braided to Infinity.  As I said above, there aren’t very many variations of this braid.  I was so excited when I found this ribbon zipper braid tutorial though.  Same exact technique, except she teaches you how to sandwich ribbon in the center of the braid.  She teaches you to use bobby pins to add the ribbon, which certainly works, but you can also just pick up a section of hair at that part and tie the ribbon around it to secure in place (my preferred method).

Zipper Braid tutorial by stylist Sarah Potempa for Cosmopolitan.  This is not a great video for learning the technique – stick to one of the tutorials above – but, I really like how she ended the style in this one and wanted to share.

Loop Zipper Braid tutorial by Maya Heart Hairstyles.  This is a fun idea which I haven’t seen before!  It’s definitely taking a difficult braid and making it more difficult, but if you are a more advanced braider and already have the zipper braid down, then give it a try!

Today is definitely one of the hardest braids in the whole challenge – but I hope that doesn’t discourage you!  Give it a try, it’ll be so rewarding once you get it.  I’d love to see how you do today’s challenge if you want to share.  You can share a photo on my Facebook page, tag me in a photo on Instagram – @hair_by_lorior just use the hashtags #30DaysNewBraids #30DNBDay16.

  1. Thanks to you, Lori, I finally tried the zipper braid couple of weeks ago to find out if it’s different from the suspended! And found the difference: the side stitches on the zipper and suspended point to opposite directions (if that makes sense). Now I can tell which is which, whereas earlier I believed they were the same! Would have probably never tried the zipper without it being in your challenge!

    1. Thanks for taking the time to comment! I’m so glad that the challenge led you to learn something new! I had never done the suspended infinity braid myself, only the zipper and so I couldn’t tell the difference either until this. It’s so fun to keep growing and learning new things!

  2. Thank you so much for including my pictures and tutorial, Lori!!
So fun to be apart of this challenge in this way! Wish I could join in more days but still I’m loving the challenge!❤️
